Priority Series to Start and Finish

In 2023 and 2024, this list included 10 brand new series each year that I wanted to start, usually including some quite well known and loved series in the fantasy genre. I’ve had really good success with every single one, including a series that is my all-time favorite, The Chorus of Dragons by Jenn Lyons.

When it came time to make the list for 2025, I struggled a little to come up with 10 that I genuinely looked forward to reading. Also, let’s be frank, I do not have any issue starting series. That’s why the list this year will consist of five series to start and five series to finish.

Let’s begin with the series that I plan specifically to start this year. When choosing the books, I took a strategic approach, attempting to double up on goals with each one.

With the first three – Promise of Blood, Northern Wrath, and The Bone Ships, I help myself with my goal of reading my backlog of book box subscription books. These series came in my Broken Binding subscription.

The fourth book, Traitor’s Blade, I purchased back in 2023 to potentially fulfill a Pokethon prompt but did not end up reading it. By prioritizing it this year, not only do I help myself with my goal of reading down my oldest TBR but I also help myself with my book box subscription back log. Sebastian de Castell has started a new series set in the

same world so to get to that book, which came in my Caffeine and Legends box, I need to read the original series first.

The last of the five, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, does not specifically help tackle any of my other goals but I’ve owned it for a little while so I figured I should start the series.

Now for the series that I want to finish.

One of those, The Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy, I have owned the longest. Reading these two books will help me not only complete the series but also the books in the Grishaverse. (Yes, I read them in completely the long wrong order.)

Two of these, The Licanius Trilogy and The Rook and Rose Trilogy were priority series to start in 2023. It’s time to finish them now. The fourth, The Spellslinger series, may also have been a priority series, but I do not remember.

The last of the series, The Thursday Murder Club I will not complete this year because the

fifth book is set to be published and I do not know if it’s the final book. However, I will catch up with the series and I just cannot wait to read these books. I plan to read them in January!

I mentioned in my goals post that I would be giving more specific numbers for my series goal. Never fear. That will come, just not in this post. I plan to write a series overview to go live at the end of January or beginning of February. Stay tuned.
